Gems, sockets and the weapon underneath

A socket is another build decision, not a reason to ignore the base item.

Start with a usable item

Jewels dropped by monsters can improve equipment through sockets. Before spending a useful gem, check the item’s class compatibility, slot and current attributes. A socketed weapon still needs to make sense for the character.

Choose a purpose

Different stat improvements solve different problems. Consider whether the hunt is limited by damage, survival or resource use. Adding more of an already comfortable stat may be less useful than fixing the weakness that ends a session early.

Read the workshop action

The workshop displays the available changes and their costs. Confirm the target item before applying an upgrade. Compare the resulting equipment again after a change rather than assuming the old comparison remains accurate.

Keep a socketed alternative safe

Gem-bearing items are protected from the ordinary bulk recycle and sale selection. This prevents a broad rarity rule from silently consuming a piece that has already received additional investment. Keep that distinction in mind when a bag still contains a few items after a large batch has been cleared.

Upgrade the bottleneck

Choose the item that already fits the hunt and vocation, then inspect its available socket action and cost. A weapon that cannot be equipped yet is a different investment from the one currently producing kills. A useful comparison keeps the opponent and skill setup the same before and after the change, so the effect is easier to judge.
